A brief historical survey of mediated communication:
Analog mediated communication
smoke signals, written language, semaphore, military drums, etc.
Industrial mediated communication:
Movable type, printing presses, the exactly repeatable image. The paradigm shift to one-to-many in a precisely repeatable way.
Wired mediated communication
Morse code, telephone.
Radio frequency mediated communication:
short wave and ham radio (ham radio is civilization's communication back up back after a catastrophe of nuclear proportions). AM and FM radio.
Hybrid mediated communication:
Call in radio, call in TV.
Digital mediated communication:
Cell phones, Smart phones, Internet (Web, IM, Email, etc.),
The major qualitative advance with digital mediated communication is the ability to communicate one-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-one, and many-to-many all at once, and record all these interactions in databases. This is the revolutionary communications paradigm change of the late 20th century, and the biggest change since movable type and printing presses made it possible to do one-to-many in an exact fashion.
